Abstract

This thesis describes the concept of the real-time operating system Ambrosia. It is designed with the special focus to the needs and restrictions of deeply embedded systems within the usage of automotive control units. After an introductory representation of possible application areas for computer systems within passenger cars the topics real-time operating systems and embedded systems are explained. In many cases the terminology in the area of real-time systems is unsatisfactory. This gievance is dissolved by defining several terms. Some important activities in the field of real-time operating systems are presented in order to compare the new concepts of Ambrosia. The described operating systems are rated with the special focus of an automotive usability. The system description of Ambrosia contains an explantation of general and automotive requirements to operating systems in automotive control units. As a result from this the particular characteristics of Ambrosia are illustrated. The new extensions of traditional synchronisation mechanisms and the new concept of a micro-scaleability make up the main points of the system representation. The essential system calls and a fragment of a typical application are shown at the end of this thesis.

Kurzfassung

Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt das Konzept des Echtzeit-Betriebssystems Ambrosia. Dieses Betriebssystem wurde unter dem besonderen Aspekt der Anforderungen und Einschränkungen von tief eingebetteten Systemen im Einsatzgebiet Automobil-Steuergeräte entworfen. Nach einer einleitenden Darstellung möglicher Anwendungsgebiete für Rechnersysteme im Automobil werden die Themenbereiche Echtzeit-Betriebssysteme und eingebettete Systeme näher erläutert. Ausgehend von einer vielfach unbefriedigenden Terminologie im Arbeitsgebiet Echtzeit werden für eine Reihe von verwendeten Begriffen Definitionen gegeben. Für die Einordnung der vorliegenden Arbeit werden verschiedene, besonders bemerkenswerte Aktivitäten auf dem Gebiet der Echtzeit-Betriebssysteme kurz vorgestellt und unter dem besonderen Gesichtspunkt eines Einsatzes in Automobil-Steuergeräten bewertet. Die Systemdarstellung des Echtzeit-Betriebssystems Ambrosia enthält zunächst eine ausführliche Erläuterung der allgemeinen und der automobilspezifischen Anforderungen an Betriebssysteme in diesem Bereich. Die sich daraus ergebenden spezialisierten Erweiterungen von Ambrosia werden anschließend aufgezeigt. Die Erweiterung traditionell vorhandener Synchronisationsmittel und das neuartige Konzept der in Ambrosia zum Einsatz kommenden Mikroskalierbarkeit bilden dabei den Schwerpunkt. Abschließend werden die wichtigsten Systemdienste kurz beschrieben und das Fragment eines typischen Anwendungsprogrammes aufgezeigt.
