Abstract

This thesis analyzes the adventages and disadventages of IPv6, the new version of the Internet Protocol, if it is used for multimedia applications. The problems of the current version of the Internet Protocol IPv4 which resulted in the development of IPv6 are described. The differences between IPv4 and IPv6 and the new facilities offered by IPv6 are explained. Furthermore, the possible ways of migrating from IPv4 to IPv6 are introduced. The necessary changes in the code of the libraries and applications to implement an environment for the analysis of IPv6 are shown. The integration of the environment in the worldwide IPv6 testbed 6bone is described. Finally, measurements are shown and discussed, which were carried out to allow comparisons of the performance of IPv4 and IPv6 with different applications. It is explained why IPv6 sould be used not only for multimedia applications.

Kurzfassung

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird untersucht, welche Vor- und Nachteile die Verwendung der neuen Version des Internet-Protokolls, IPv6, für multimediale Anwendungen mit sich bringen wird. Die Probleme der gegenwärtig gebräuchlichen Internet-Protokollversion IPv4, die zur Entwicklung von IPv6 führten, werden beschrieben. Die Unterschiede zwischen IPv4 und IPv6 werden erläutert, ebenso wie die neuen Möglichkeiten, die IPv6 bietet. Weiterhin werden die Migrationswege von IPv4 zu IPv6 aufgezeigt. Die notwendigen Änderungen am Programmcode der Bibliotheken und Anwendungen, die zur Implementierung einer Testumgebung für die Untersuchung von IPv6 dienen, werden dargestellt. Die Integration der Testumgebung in das weltweite IPv6-Testnetzwerk 6bone wird beschrieben. Abschließend werden Messungen dargestellt und diskutiert, die durchgeführt wurden, um Leistungsvergleiche zwischen IPv6 und IPv4 bei verschiedenen Anwendungen zu ermöglichen. Es wird begründet, warum IPv6 nicht nur für multimediale Anwendungen eingesetzt werden sollte.
