Realtime systems plays more and more a role in live. Examples are control systems in
airplaines (fly-by-wire), rockets and subsystems in automotives. In contrast
to traditional systems in realtime systems the correctness of computations not only
depends on the correctness of the results but also on the timeliness of the results
(deadlines). A system which provides correct results after its deadline is
considered to be incorrect.
Interconnection networks in such systems must meet some special conditions. In
addition to reliability and stability there are demands to predictibility and determinism.
Predictibility means that there exists an upper bound to the transmission time
of messages over the network which is given e.g. in token rings but not within
ethernet (CSMA/CD). In this paper some networks and their protocols are considered
which are used in realtime systems.
