In favour of the simulation of distributed computer systems in a performance study we require a description of the real workload in a distributed computer system. The contents of this work is a general draft for the determination and description of a real workload on distributed systems with a stochastic model and their application. The workload will be described through some processes with special attributes and the arrivals of the processes at the system. The processes are described with four distributions, which describe the calculation time, memory requirements, and the quantity and speed of the input and output operations. The used methods, which transform the real workload to an artificial workload, are part of the conversion of the draft. This includes the extraction of information from the accounting logs, the reduction from many real processes to some artifical characterisitical processes and the determination of the parameters of the distribution functions. This work is concluded with the outcome of a workload measurement on a workstation cluster with six workstations.
